Protecting Your Dumpster from Bears

Posted on

When you rent a dumpster, you don't want destructive animals like bears ripping into it. If you live in bear territory, then you are at risk for them raiding your trash bins. Bears are not only dangerous to humans and pets, but they can also cause a lot of damage. While it is difficult to discourage an extremely determined bear, there are some things you can do to minimize risk to you and your dumpster.

Rent Bear Proof or Bear-Resistant Dumpsters

If you have bears in your area, then rent a dumpster that makes it hard for a bear to break into. These types of dumpsters are made with heavy gauge metal to hold up to the bears' pounding and pushing as well as make it difficult for them to use their claws to pry open the covers. The dumpster you rent needs to be appropriate for the bear species in your area. Grizzly bears are much stronger than black bears and may require a dumpster with stronger deterrents.

Lock Covers and Tops

Make sure your dumpster comes with a bear-proof cover and doors, preferably with a strong lock. Many bear-proof dumpsters and trash containers come with automatically locking lids that lock when you drop or slam them closed. These lids also have an opening mechanism that is easy for you to operate, but difficult for a bear.

Reduce or Eliminate Strong Smells

Bag all types of food in a strong, seal-able bag to reduce or eliminate scents. Rinsing off food containers before tossing them is also a great way to reduce attractive odors. Lime or similar materials placed in the bin will absorb and eliminate food smells. A moving or wiggling scarecrow or a device that squirts water when motion is detected, placed near the dumpster may also discourage bears.

Place Your Dumpster Carefully

If you rent out a large dumpster, make sure that you place it in an area away from fences and walls that a bear could climb. Also, consider placing the dumpster in a busy area with good lighting to discourage activity as well as better allow you to see the bear and take precautions.

When a bear finds a reliable food source, then they will return again and again. This puts both you, your pets, and the bear at risk for harm. Therefore, you must make your dumpster less attractive to not only bears but other animals as well. If you are concerned about animals breaking into your dumpster, then talk to a dumpster rental company to see what options are available to minimize this problem.
